Initially I remember the rule of “800px by 600px” as a design size – so the page stretched the entire 800 pixels across the screen – simply amazing! Lol – fast forward 25 years and the process involves including new stuff like speed, readability, mobile compatibility and more. These go along with most of the old-school cornerstones of Title, Keywords, Description, H1, Alt Tags. How to Tell if Your Site Already Has SEO

When we first begin on a client’s project we take a look at their existing website, and see what it involves. For starters, does it even have search engine optimization? It’s amazing how many people we come across who have sites that have not been optimized at all, no page title or description, no alt tags, nothing. How can you tell if your site already has SEO? I hover over the browser tab of the website and usually a pop up text shows the ‘Title’ of the website. You can also right click on your website and select ‘View Source’ and it will show a bunch of code – and in there you can sometimes find a <title> tag, a <description> tag and others and see what they say. Does it just say your business name? That isn’t a keyword – does it have a title?

So we start from the ground up, if you have no SEO – an excellent agency will begin by creating a sound SEO marketing strategy by looking at your top competitors and see what they are doing. Most big companies have already spent the time and research to find what works. We look at the top ranked sites and see which keywords and practices they are using to achieve their high rank. 

Adding the Necessary Items to Your Web Pages

Once we’ve gathered enough data, we begin adding in the necessary items to your web pages. The meta title, meta description, keywords or keyphrases, H1 tags, alt tags. Next is your content, you need enough of it, it has to make sense  and include the keywords you’re looking for. Then we’ll link all the pages together internally, and then link externally to the appropriate places. Good SEO practices include looking at items that are not on your site or On-Site SEO and include looking at your backlinks, blogging techniques, social media posting and backlinks and more.

Once the on-site work has been completed, we begin looking at how fast the page loads. First we check how fast the hosting company ( SiteGround or GoDaddy for example ) is delivering your website to people – some hosts deliver faster content, automatically increasing their ‘Page Speed’ score to make Google ‘like’ them more. Next we look at how fast your website loads from it’s own resources. Does it load fast on the screen? Is there heavy video or other media that is hindering it loading quickly? Google often tells folks to ‘minify’ their javascript and css files – these are fancy ways of saying get the extra weight off your site – every way possible. You can even set some sites to only load content ‘above the fold’ versus showing it once entire pages’ content has loaded first.

Testing out your page speed can be done via Google Search Console or using a new Chrome browser extension called “Lighthouse” which is currently buried in the ‘inspect element’ section of your Chrome browser. If you right click on a page and select ‘Inspect Element’ – a section shows up on the site with a bunch of tabs and code. One of those tabs, hidden in there is a free speed tool checker called Lighthouse – and it gives an in-depth analysis of how fast your site is, why, and what needs to be fixed.

Social Posting Calendar

Social media optimization occurs when you have a complete social posting calendar that is being done every day or week. Some aspects involve increasing your followers using organic methods of great posts, informative content, contests or giveaways and more. When people “like” your posts – you can invite each of them to also come back and “like” your page. This then shows up on their friends pages as a page their friend recently liked, setting up each post for maximum virality and ‘visibility’.

Speed, Visibility, and Authority

The name of the game these days is speed, visibility and authority. Speed is achieved by having your content delivery efficiently in the right way. Visibility is achieved by having your on-site SEO work well enough to bring in traffic organically without having to ‘Pay Per Click’ like with Google Ads. Other aspects of visibility besides search engines is how and where are you active on social media? How often are you blogging, and is it creating healthy backlinks and ultimately traffic or brand recognition for you?

Once every box has been checked, your site becomes more or less optimized. Your top competitors have their sites ‘more’ optimized, hence they show up higher on search results usually. Less optimized sites won’t show up on the home page in general.
